I am Nataliya Gurshman and I am a fine artist, art teacher, and mom of two. I have been painting since I was eight years old. As I was growing up in the beautiful, snowy, though romantic city of Leningrad in the former Soviet Union, I had a dear friend who was on the path to becoming an artist, and who was willing to teach. That's how the seed of art was planted in me, which my parents supported and encouraged. To this day, I am in touch with that friend and continue to respect his artistic opinion. I went through a rigorous art high school within the Art Academy of Leningrad where the education was limited to screaming teachers with occasionally valuable advice from the later. What I learnt during those formative years materialized in my teaching approach many years later, in the States, to where we immigrated 28 years ago. Once in the States, I eagerly continued my art education in a much more conducive to artistic development surrounding. I became very free artistically, much more successful in color choices as I was feeling the artistic rebirth and revelation with the support of wonderful, talented and kind teachers I encountered. I am eternally grateful for all those mentors who patiently listened to me, gave me their love, honesty and nurtured my growth. These days, I hear myself speaking the same words of wisdom and experience similar patience mixed with compassion towards my students as it was offered once to me.
I lived in NYC for quite some time and it remains to be my love. This painting reflects NYC that I see, full of colors, excitement, depth, beautiful architecture and contrasts... I mostly used palette knife.
