Kathleen has been painting since she was eight years old. She holds a BA in studio art from Mary Washington College and an MFA in painting from American University. After teaching art in public schools for over 32 years, Kathleen retired over 5 years ago and now has time to do what she loves; walking, hiking, yoga and of course painting! Kathleen has been a resident of Lovettsville for over 33 years and has found endless inspiration for her landscape paintings in this beautiful area. She works in acrylics and enjoys their versatility. Her style is representational/impressionist. Expressive color and texture have become important in her recent work along with increasing experimentation using painting knife. Kathleen shows locally and has won several awards.
I have been in love with trees my whole life and have probably painted thousands! On my frequent walks I saw this old dying ash tree many times. One day when the light was right I took a series of photos one of which became this study . Beautiful but sad this old tree reached out its brances and I knew I would paint it. Done with brush amd painting knife I felt its strength as I worked. After it’s gone I will remember it.
