George Baker

I am a painter in oils. I focus on color and composition. After several years primarily as a studio painter, I am increasingly painting in plein air. Subject matter includes landscapes, seascapes, floral arrangements and still lifes. Locations include my home state of Virginia, and my summer home on the Coast of Maine.

Each summer I spend a couple of weeks painting on Monhegan Island, 10 miles off the Coast of Maine. Monhegan is famed for its exceptional light that has attracted artists since the mid-19th century. This is a studio piece done from a photo I took at sunset. The location was just north of the island wharf. I was chatting with fellow artist and mentor Frank Bruckmann, who was capturing the sunset over Manana Island, when I turned and photographed the glow of the sun hitting the rocks behind me.

Oil on canvas, 18x24 (framed 24x30)
